Sexuality, a vital part of women's identities, is often overlooked in the clinical process. In treating all women, regardless of the "presenting issue," clinician awareness and understanding of the core sense of the female self as a sexual being, is essential to the holistic healing process for all women.

Because women's sexuality is woven into several challenges in the therapeutic process, (i.e. substance abuse, avoidance of intimacy, involvement in exploitive relationships, compulsive or overly controlled eating, self- mutilation or other destructive patterns of living) clinicians will learn how various sexual experiences and childhood scripts can either lead to healthy sexual identity and development or may contribute to these various maladaptive coping behaviors.

Participants will learn the basics of Trauma Informed Care and be provided with theory, application, information, tools, and unique somatic techniques to Sex Positive Approaches.

Most importantly, participants also will learn methods to become comfortable approaching sexuality keeping female clients feeling safe, non-threatened and supported in the clinical setting.

Objectives

The participant will be able to:

  1. Understand and define how female sexuality is of vital importance to clinical practice;
  2. Discuss influences that can shape body image discomfort and vulnerability in women;
  3. Participate in the value of the playful child in connecting with healthy sexuality;
  4. Describe the role of sexual trauma in self-destructive patterns of behavior;
  5. Demonstrate somatic techniques that facilitate mindfulness and enhance women's embodiment of themselves as healthy sexual beings;
  6. Identify sex positive techniques that help women redefine negative experiences and overcome archaic scripts from childhood.
